hammertoe

Hammertoe Treatment Doctor can provide Expert care to help you live pain free.

The toe has two joints. These joints allow for bending in the middle and bottom of the toe. Flexion of the middle joint or downward bending of the middle joint is the result of a hammertoe condition.

Common causes of hammertoe include:

  • Injury to the toe
  • Arthritis
  • Foot arch, usually high
  • Wearing tight-fitting shoes
  • The foot tendons or ligaments are too tighten.

Damage to the peripheral nerve and spinal cord may also cause downward curling of all the toes.

People with a hammertoe may feel some discomfort while walking. There may also be some pain when stretching the affected toe or attempting to move it. Symptoms of hammertoe may be mild or severe. They include:

  • Downward bending of the toe
  • Calluses or corns.
  • Difficulty when walking.
  • Inability to wiggle toes or flex foot.
  • Toes become claw-like.

If you have any of the above conditions, please see a podiatrist near Wyandotte and Oak Park.

HOW DO I KNOW I HAVE A HAMMERTOE?

People with a hammertoe may feel some discomfort while walking. There may also be some pain when stretching the affected toe or attempting to move it. Symptoms of hammertoe may be mild or severe. They include:

  • Downward bending of the toe
  • Calluses or corns.
  • Difficulty when walking.
  • Inability to wiggle toes or flex foot.
  • Toes become claw-like.

If you have any of the above conditions, please see a podiatrist near Wyandotte and Oak Park.

Treatment is based on the severity of the condition.

Mild hammer toe

If hammertoe is caused by poor-fitting footwear, treatment is as easy as changing to the correct footwear. If the hammertoe is caused by a problem with the arch a podiatrist near Wyandotte and Oak Park may recommend toe pads or insoles in the shoes. These pads shift the position of the toe which can relieve the pain and correct the physical appearance of the toe.

The foot and ankle doctor in Wyandotte and Oak Park may also recommend over-the-counter medications, pads, and cushions to help in the treatment of corns and bunions.

If the toes develop blisters it is recommended you not pop them. Popping blisters can cause infection and pain. Pain can be relived by using over-the-counter creams and cushions.

Gentle stretching of the toes can also relieve pain while repositioning hammertoe.

Severe hammer toe

Severe hammertoe can only be corrected through surgery.  Surgery re-positions the toe, removes injured or deformed bone, and realigns the joints and tendons. Surgery is often an outpatient procedure, but consult a foot and ankle doctor in Wyandotte and Oak Park for more information.

The best way to prevent hammertoe is to wear properly fitted shoes. Toes should have ample wiggle room. If you aren't sure what size shoe you wear, have your foot measured at a foot store. Avoid shoes with heels higher than 2 inches as toes receive the bulk of pressure and bend. High heels also cause the formation of high arches or corns.
